Johnston Foundry & Gallery

The only bronze foundry in the Bahamas, this is certainly one of the most unique places to purchase art in the Bahamas. Additionally, Peter Johnson keeps an art gallery on the beach where those interested in his artwork, and the works of other locals, can browse and perhaps take a piece of home as a souvenir.

The bronze foundry was built so that the Johnsons could cast their sculptures, which they do exceedingly well. Their primary muse is local marine and wild life. In the gallery, patrons may purchase bronze art sculpture which has been created by three generations of Johnstons who founded the settlement of Little Harbour in the 1950s. Their pieces can be viewed in the gallery in addition to pottery by Alice Bain, boxes and prints from Bob Zwickel and Pam Webb, and photographs by Tuppy Weatherford. Some of the most popularly sold items are the smaller bronzes mounted on driftwood.

Getting There

Located near the middle of the island of Great Abaco, near Winding Bay, Johnston Foundry & Gallery always welcomes customers exploring and browsing shops on this part of the island. Even if you are not staying in the vicinity, you are free to stop by. In case you're wondering, Hopetown is 14 and a half miles (23 and a half kilometers) to the north.

If you're hoping to do a lot of comparison shopping, you'll probably be disappointed -- but you could consider visiting one of the other interesting stores that are fairly close, like Pete's Pub & Gallery. The gallery is open November through mid-August. Between November and January they are open Thursday through Sunday, and from February through mid-August they are open every day from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
