The interesting thing about the Abacos is that some islands in the group have rental cars to offer tourists, while others do not have or even allow cars on the island at all. In these cases, locals have gotten crafty and begun using bicycles and golf courts as major sources of transportation.
When renting a car in the Abacos, the process is fairly simple and straight forward. You must be 25-years-old or older, have a driver's license from your country of origin or an International Driver's License, and a credit card with enough of an available balance to cover the cost and a deposit on the car. If all of these things are in order, you should have no trouble getting the keys. You can expect to pay anywhere from $65 to $100(USD) a day for a rental in the Abacos, depending simply on which type of vehicle you want to rent and when you visit the islands.
As mentioned, not every island in the Abacos has rental cars on the island. Green Turtle Cay and Elbow Cay are both good examples of this. In this case, most tourists will choose to rent a golf cart instead. Golf carts can be rented in either gas or electric, and tourists need only be 21-years-old with a valid driver's license.

...get used to local customs...
Though each island is slightly different, there are a few things that are common across the board. First, driving is done on the left side of the road like in Europe, although the steering wheel is typically placed on the left side of the car like in the United States. Seat belts are mandatory, and young children must be buckled into the appropriate safety restraint for their size and age. You cannot rent these seats, so if you don't want to buy one when you arrive, you'll need to bring them from home.
Take note that roads in large towns like Marsh Harbour are typically decent and well-lit, but as you drive away from the tourist centers, they become cracked, and riddled with pot-holes, lacking in street signs, and without lighting. Locals aren't known for being the best drivers either, and you'll have to be on the lookout for drivers heading your way in the middle of the road, speeding by you, and stopping shortly and quickly.
Rentals typically cost between $250 and $300(USD) a week, with gas powered carts costing more. If you remember to plug your electric cart in overnight, you can generally get two to three good trips around the island in on them.
Driving in the Abacos can be an adventure, and many tourists need a few short turns at the wheel to get used to local customs. It is still a great option for those who will be doing a lot of exploring, need a vehicle for personal reasons, or simply like being in control of their own destiny.
