Acklins offers 92 square miles of land to explore, from the breathtaking beaches to the unique interior with interesting rock formations and overflowing fauna. The best way to see it all is to rent a car and keep moving throughout your stay, ensuring you can go from place to place on your own time, and even stop and sit for awhile if you happen upon a site that you want to see more of.
There are only a handful of rental car agencies on the island, all of which are locally owned and operated. Because of this, each different location is allowed to apply their own rules and regulations on potential clients. For example, the legal driving age on Acklins is 17, but most agencies require people to be between 21 and 25 to rent with them. Some places only accept cash, and others like to keep things informal and only provide documentation proving the rental occurred when asked. One thing is true of all locations, though, and that is that you need a valid driver's license in order to drive off the lot.

What you need to know about driving on Acklins is that the roads are not in the best condition when they exist at all. Dirt roads are common place, and as such you may want to ask for a vehicle with four wheel drive and excellent suspension such as a Jeep. Also be aware that traffic moves to the left side of the road unlike in the United States.
The cost of renting a car here will vary greatly depending on who you rent with, when you visit, the type of car you request, and any amenities you'd like as part of your rental package. For budgetary purposes plan on spending between $60 and $90(USD) not including insurance.
Renting a car is a go-to for many people whenever they plan a vacation, but knowing what to expect in each different location is important. The best thing to do is to call your rental agency of choice and get the low-down on their requirements directly from the source.
