Traveling to Aguadilla by Airplane

Aguadilla is home to one of four international airports in Puerto Rico

Thanks to an international airport located three miles outside of the city center of Aguadilla, there are several different options for tourists who plan to spend their vacation in this coastal town. A number of factors will go into helping you decide which route to take, including convenience, cost, and scheduling.

There are three flight paths you can take in order to arrive by plane to Aguadilla. The first is the fly direct to Aguadilla. The second is to fly initially to the international airport in San Juan then transfer to Aguadilla aboard a local carrier. Finally, you can fly to San Juan, rent a car, and drive.

Direct to Aguadilla

Named after a famous Puerto Rican composer, the Rafael Hernandez Airport is small, but an important link for tourists traveling to this area. In fact, the airport has become such a popular destination that international flights with United Airlines, Spirit Airlines and Jet Blue from Newark, New York City and Orlando have become regular options. This means if you can find a flight at a time that works for you, you'll be able to skip the airport in Isla Verde all together.

Some facts about Rafael Hernandez Airport: it was once the Ramey Air Force Base, but was converted to an airport when the base closed and is now owned by the Puerto Rico Ports Authority. The paved runway is 11,701 feet long, and the passenger terminal was recently upgraded to include air conditioning, modern ticket and rental car counters, one gate for arrivals, and one gate for departures.

A $1 billion revamp of the airport has been approved by the Federal Aviation Administration, and over the next 20 years the airport will be expanded to include 30 commercial passenger gates, more air-cargo options, a runway renovation, and an expansion of the road that leads to the airport.

Traveling from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport

The hub of air travel on Puerto Rico is the Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) in Isla Verde, and you can get direct flights from most cities in the United States as well as from around the world. Most people find it easiest to travel to this airport just because there are so many options on a daily basis.

The airport has an asphalt runway that measures 9,783 feet long in addition to a 8,016 foot long concrete runway, four terminals, a shopping center and food court, and conference rooms. One of the perks of this airport to consider is baggage storage, which will cost you $6(USD) per bag per day.

If you do decide to fly to Isla Verde, you can take a domestic flight to Aguadilla or you can drive. The trip takes about two hours, traveling west on the De Diego Expressway to Route 22, then to Route 2.

If you're traveling from the United States the following list can aid the planning process. Not all flights you will see on some websites are good options so it can be helpful to know which airlines actually offer direct service to this location.
