How to Reach Ambergris Caye by Airplane

You'll have to make at least one connection before your final flight to Ambergris Caye

Because Ambergis Caye is an island off the northeast coast of Belize City, flying is one of only two ways to get to the island. An international flight will get you into the country, and from there you'll switch to a smaller domestic plane to get to the smaller airport on the 25 mile long island.

Flying to Ambergris Caye from the US

Because the airport on Ambergris Caye is not equipped to handle large commercial jets, it is impossible to book an international flight directly to the island. For this reason, a flight into Belize City is the first stop along the way.

Houston, Miami, New Orleans, and North Carolina are the four cities in the United States with airports that offer direct flights to Belize City on a regular basis, while others will typically arrange for a connection in Guatemala or El Salvador before transferring passengers to Belize. The direct flight to Belize takes about two hours and can generally be booked through American Airlines, United Airlines, and US Airways.

Flying to Ambergris Caye from the Caribbean

From Belize City it takes approximately 15 minutes to get to Ambergris Caye by plane. Flights are available from both airports in Belize City on almost the same schedule through domestic airlines Maya Island Air and Tropic Air. Flights originate from the Belize City Municipal Airport, fly 10 minutes to Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport to pick up passengers there, then continue on to Ambergris Caye, sometimes stopping to drop off or pick up passengers in Caye Caulker when there is need.

The flights begin each morning at 7:30 a.m. and continue on every hour throughout the day until the last trip at 5:30 p.m. If you're flying from the Belize City Municipal Airport, you'll pay about $32(SUSD) one way, while flights from the Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport are more expensive at $57(USD) per seat each way.

When you fly into Ambergris Caye, you'll be arriving at the San Pedro Airport (SPR), which is the only airport in Belize outside of Belize City that is a full airport rather than just an air strip. Still, this is a small facility with a 3,501 foot asphalt runway, maintenance, and terminal facilities.

See the following chart for scheduled air service from airports in the region. If you can't get a flight directly from your local airport, connecting through another regional airport might be your best option.

Ferry Connection

Not everyone will fly to Belize City then hop on a flight directly to Ambergris Caye. Tourists also have the option of leaving the airport and heading to the Marine Terminal to take a ferry to the island. There are numerous double-engine speedboats that carry 20 to 30 passengers at a time that offer this service for about $10(USD) one way. The trip takes between 70 and 90 minutes, because these boats will also generally make stops at other cays along the way.

Some tourists believe that taking the ferry is a cheaper option; but keep in mind that you'll spend around $30(USD) on a taxi ride to the terminal, plus the cost of your ferry ticket. This makes the prices comparable enough that your budget need not dictate which option you choose.

Transportation from the Airport

Many of the larger resorts on Ambergris Caye will provide airport pick up for their guests if arranged in advance. When this is not an option, you can take a taxi from the airport or the ferry terminal to your accommodations. If you're planning to rent a golf cart, scooter, or bike, you can do this at a location outside of the airport, as their are no rental facilities located on property.

Getting to Ambergris Caye by plane, or otherwise, takes a bit of planning. You may need to take some time to decide which flight path works best for you based on your schedule and budget, and you may even decide that after flying to Belize you want to experience local ferry services. The choice is yours as you work to create you dream getaway in this exotic locale.
