Andros Car Rentals

Rental cars help tourists cover a lot of ground on Andros

There is a lot of land to cover on Andros. At 2,300 square miles, it is the largest island in the Bahamas, and the fifth largest overall in the Caribbean. Much of this space remains undeveloped, which means in many areas public transportation is lacking. For this reason, renting a car is the recommended course of action for those who will be doing a lot of exploring.

Renting a Car

From coast to coast, there are numerous places to rent a car on Andros, all of which are locally owned and operated. In many cases, this means you'll encounter an informal rental agreement that involves the shake of a hand rather than a signed document. If this makes you uncomfortable, simply ask for something in writing. You'll need to be over the age of 21 to rent at each location, as well as be in possession of a valid driver's license from your country of origin. Since every location is different, make sure to call ahead and ask if there are any specific regulations you need to be aware of.

Driving on Andros

From Morgan's Bluff to Behring Point, you'll have the opportunity to drive on 65 miles of roads on Andros. The roads here are rugged, which is part of the island's natural charm, but it doesn't make it easy for them to drive on. Visitors are instructed to proceed with caution, driving slow and paying close attention to the road so you are not caught off guard by pot holes. Also, remember to keep to the left side of the road, which is how traffic moves on the island.

Rental Costs

The cost of your rental will vary depending on who you rent with and what type of vehicle you request. In general, the range is from $70 to $120(USD), not including the cost of insurance. Be aware that some locations only accept cash, so make sure you have enough on hand.

Gas Stations

If you've got plans to go-go-go during your stay on Andros, it is in your best interest to consider renting a car. There are a few things to be aware of like the fact that many locations don't accept credit cards, but these are kinks that can be worked out with a simple phone call to the agency of your choice.
