Antigua is known for its numerous beaches, and as a premier yachting destination, but there is one other activity that the country excels in: shopping.
Like many Caribbean islands, most of the high end goods available in Antigua are imported from overseas, especially from the island's mother country of England. Some of the most popular duty free items include imports from England, such as linens and wool-spun items. Other duty-free possibilities include china, jewelry, liquor, and perfumes.
...explore unique architecture while they shop...
Shopping can be found throughout the entire island.
The best shopping in Antigua can be found in St. John's, among the shops on St. Mary's Street or High Street. Stores in this popular shopping district include department stores, souvenir shops, clothing boutiques, and shops that sell perfumes, make up, housewares, and more. If you're looking for it in Antigua, chances are you will find it on St. Mary's or High.
Another favorite shopping spot in St. John's is over on the southern edge of town, at Redcliff Quay. A former warehouse provides space for three dozen or more shops, surrounded by impeccably landscaped courtyards. The shops in this plaza sell a wide variety of goods, from linens and jewelry to pottery and handicrafts.
Cruise ship shoppers tend to end up at Heritage Quay, due to its close proximity to the piers. There are over 40 duty-free shops here, numerous restaurants, and space for local artists to display their work. The shops here are in operation for extended hours compared to the norm in Antigua, remaining open from 9 a.m. until 5:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
Saturday mornings present a real treat in St. John's, as a farmer's market opens up at the end of Market Street. Fresh fruits and vegetables fill the vendor booths, allowing visitors the opportunity to purchase the freshest produce. Antiguan black pineapple is a particular favorite.
Shopkeepers in the English Harbour shopping district have often taken up residence in some of the island's historic buildings, affording shoppers the opportunity to explore unique architecture while they shop. The view of the harbour is a bonus not to be overlooked. Shops here range from clothing boutiques to handicrafts.
There is an abundance of local artisans that offer their own wares. If you are on a hunt to find locally made goods, be on the look out for batik, hand-printed fabrics, pottery, shell curios, and straw woven pieces (particularly hats), and Susie's hot sauce.
