Before cars became the main source of transportation in Aruba, donkeys were brought to the island to serve such a purpose. As motorized vehicles became more prevalent, the need for donkeys decreased, and their care did as well.

Then, in the 1970s, a disease spread through the donkey community that wiped out a great deal of their population. The people at the Aruban Donkey Sanctuary knew that something must be done, and finally in 1997 the non-profit organization opened its doors.

Visitors are welcome to come explore the property and learn about the friendly animal in between relaxing on the porch with a cold drink, coffee, tea, or ice cream. Volunteers are always available to answer questions and you can even volunteer to help with feedings and cleaning beginning at 9:00 a.m.
