The church, whose name in English is Church of Our Lady of Mercy, was built prior to 1550, but sacked and destroyed by Francis Drake. Rebuilt (as well as several times later) features a grand interior that was built in the traditional style of the Spanish.
Visitors are free to explore what remains of the church, and the devotional areas dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes is located in Bani, so visitors to this area of the Dominican Republic will have easy site access throughout their trip.
