Orchid World opened in 1998 at the behest of the then Prime Minister of Barbados, and has since then provided a lovely attraction for visitors who enjoy the chance to walk through a lush garden and see a wide variety of orchids flourishing in the warm temperatures of the island.
Over 30,000 orchids and other tropical plants are carefully cared for on six acres at Groves Plantation.
One of the few orchid botanical gardens in the region, Orchid World is a popular attraction that fits right in on the Caribbean island. As you explore the gardens, you will get a first hand look at the natural beauty of the island. Tours through the orchid gardens are available, and umbrellas are even provided to guests on rainy days.
Orchid World is located in St. George, near Applewhaites; it is four miles (six and a half kilometers) to the south-southwest of Bathsheba.
Visitors traveling by bus should ride aboard the Sergeant Street bus from the Fairchild Main Terminal in Bridgetown. The bus lets off right in front of Orchid World once an hour. In all this trip can take around forty minutes, so for time and ease, it is recommended that visitors take a taxi or drive themselves. Drivers can take Highway 3 to Market Hill and turn onto Groves or Highway 4 to Newbury, and on to Groves. Purple signs point to Orchid World.
If you work up an appetite wandering around the gardens, don't worry -- you can find an impressive array of dining possibilities in the vicinity. Naniki Restaurant, which plates up Caribbean meals, is also the most convenient dining option from the botanical gardens. The restaurant is a small ways away, but far enough that you might decide to make advance plans for using a viable mode of transport to travel there. Also nearby, you'll find restaurants including Paulo's Churrasco Do Brasil and where you should test out Italian dishes and enjoy the culture of Barbados.
Active travelers that like gardens, and would like to see others, should check out Hunte's Garden and Flower Forest; the first and closest of which is two and a half miles to the north of these botanical gardens. You'll find a couple other places of interest in the area, including , which is three quarters of a mile away St. George. Also consider visiting Gun Hill Signal Station, which is another attraction close by.
