Direct international flights to the airport on Barbuda simply don't exist, so tourists planning a quiet getaway on this small, secluded island will first have to land at the V.C. Bird International Airport on the larger island of Antigua. From there, a flight to Barbuda is possible, but not guaranteed unless you book a private charter.
The Codrington Airport (BBQ) is Barbuda's resident airport, and an extremely small one at that. The airport consists of a 1,640 foot paved runway, and a small building for air traffic control. There is only one regular service to the island, aboard , which leaves from the V.C. Bird International Airport on Antigua every morning that there are enough passengers at 8:00 a.m., and returns at 2:00 p.m. The service is irregular, and the plane is small, just big enough to handle about eight passengers and their luggage. The cost is about $110(USD) per ticket each way, and you can contact them at 268-562-7183 for more information.
Chartered flights with certified carriers are also available and may be cost effective for groups of four to five people with a lot of luggage. The two hotels on the island will arrange a flight or a helicopter ride for their guests from Antigua, saving you the hassle. A flight from Antigua in total takes about 15 minutes.
Tourists traveling internationally will find that V.C. Bird welcomes flights several times a week aboard major commercial airlines from the United States, Canada, Europe, and Latin America, but because the flight to Barbuda leaves so early in the morning you will need to plan to stay at least one night on Antigua. When you arrive at V.C. Bird, you'll need to travel through customs with your passport, naturalization certificate, immigration form, a return or onward ticket, and proof of both your accommodations and money to get you through your stay. This process could take up two hours, so be sure to keep that in mind if you're hoping to immediately hop on a plane to Barbuda.
