The co-cathedral is the current reincarnation of the Catholic Church in Basseterre. The first was destroyed by British soldiers in 1706. No Catholic Church could be found in the city until 1856, bearing the name Church of the Immaculate Conception. It was reconstructed in its modern form from 1926 to 1928.
