Independence Square

Well named, Independence Square is the political, economic, and cultural center of the city, as well as the location of the Old Slave Market. Renamed "Independence Square" in honor of St. Kitt's independence on September 19, 1983, it helps pave a new way of freedom for the island and all of its inhabitants.


There are several historical attractions and shops for visitors to see either on or near the square. Anyone looking to explore the culture of the city will likely want to start here.

Independence Square is located in downtown Basseterre, ensuring visitors to this part of St. Kitts will have the benefit of convenient access to the historical site throughout their trip. You won't find the area surrounding the historical site flooded with tourists, particularly since there aren't many hotel rooms nearby.

Independence Square guests will be able to find a modest selection of outdoor activities like working on their golf game and doing some beach-going not far away. Historic site guests interested in testing their skills on the golf course will surely enjoy heading over to nearby Royal St. Kitts Golf Club. Many moments can also be planned at Half Moon Bay, the closest beach. Though you might find your options limited, a few other equally enjoyable outdoor options to choose from nearby. Visitors will discover plenty of indoor places to visit in this general area. There are two places you may enjoy -Co-Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and Basseterre Courthouse- both of which are situated a short distance from the historic site.
