In order to rent a car, you'll need to have a local driver's permit which will cost about $24(USD) and allows you to drive on the island for three months. You can purchase the permit from the Traffic department, but most rental agencies include it as a part of your rental. Make sure to ask when you reserve your rental if this is the case.

The Cost of Renting a Car

You can rent all different types of vehicles in St. Kitts, from motorbikes to minivans, but it will cost you somewhere between $40 and $60(USD) a day, not including the cost of the collision damage charges and further recommended insurance. Be aware that you cannot rent a car at the airport, but most agencies offer airport pick up and drop off. Again, it is always best to call and confirm this with your agency.

Gas Stations

There isn't much traffic to be heard of on St. Kitts, so tourists who are typically wary about driving in a foreign country will find this island a good place to practice. Do be aware that traffic moves on the left side of the road, and that roads are not in the best condition, but they are workable if you keep your attention on the road at all times. Seat belts are required by law, and if you're traveling with young children be sure to bring the appropriate safety seat along with you.

As you can see, there are not many reasons why renting would be a bad idea here. While prices can be high, the ease and number of options help make up for it.
