Flying to Belize City

There are two airports in Belize City: one for international travel, and one for domestic flights

Belize City is the hub of international air travel into the Central American country of Belize. Most tourists who fly to this country will first land here and if they aren't staying in the city transfer to a smaller domestic airline and connect to their final destination. Others will stay on and enjoy the entirety of their vacation in town.

Flying to Belize City from the US

Tourists traveling to Belize City from the United States can book direct flights from four cities with American Airlines, United Airlines, and US Airways. These cities are Houston, Texas; New Orleans, Louisiana; Miami, Florida; and Raleigh, North Carolina. Flights from other airports will have you connecting in one of these four cities, or in Guatemala or El Salvador.

If you're traveling from the U.S. the following chart may be helpful. Not all of the flight combinations you will find listed on some of the booking engines make sense so it helps to know which airlines fly directly to this location.

Miami, FL, USA MIA American Airlines

All of the international flights mentioned above fly into the Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport (BZE) on a regular basis. The airport is located about 30 minutes away from the center of Belize City along the Northern Highway in Ladyville. This is the largest airport in the country, with restaurants and shops in the main terminal, a tourist information booth in the baggage claim areas, and a bank in the departure terminal. Across the parking lot is where tourists who plan on driving away from the airport will find the on-site car rental agencies, but taxis are always on standby, waiting to pick up visitors when they arrive. A taxi into Belize City will cost between $25 and $30(USD).

Flying to Belize City from Canada

In the past, tourist could fly to Belize from Canada via Tropic Air; though currently that option does not exists. Perhaps it will be added again in the future. Additionally, an expansion project is underway that hopes to entice air crafts from Europe by 2015.

Flying to Belize City from Europe

Flying to Belize City from Europe is no simple task. You should expect a few transfers, and will likely need to switch airlines at least once. The simplest option is to take a flight from any major European city to the United States, where you can take a major airline, such as Delta Airlines or United Airlines, to Belize City. Another option is to take a Virgin Airlines flight out of London to Cancun, and then take Maya Island Air to Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport.

Either way, you will need to switch planes.

The chart below has some of the airlines that fly into Belize, as well as their European contact information.

Flying to Belize City from the Caribbean

As you might expect, Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport also has a respectable offering of Caribbean based flights. However, another option does exists for those already in Belize and are planning on staying domestic.

As a municipal airport, Belize City Municipal Airport only sees domestic flights from around the country touchdown on its 1,825 foot long concrete runway. This airport is the headquarters for one of the top local airlines, Maya Island Air, which mainly offers flights to the Belize cays, and is telling of the other types of flights you'll see on the roaster. If you're flying to Belize City from another city in Belize, or if you want to quickly get to another place in the country, this is the airport you'll use.

See the table below for air service from other Caribbean airports. If you can't get a flight from a local airport, a connecting flight from a regional airport may be a very good solution.
