Avoiding a rental car is possible in Belize City thanks to the abundance of taxis that are found here. Each village, town, and city in Belize treats taxi services just slightly differently, and here you'll find operations to center around arrivals and departures at the airport.
The first thing you'll see when you leave the interior of theis a sea of taxis waiting to pick up passengers and whisk them off to their accommodations. You'll also find them in abundance in Tourism Village, around the center of town, and near any of the most popular tourist destinations.
If you can't find a taxi on the street or don't feel comfortable hailing one, you can call in advance and have a driver pick you up at a prearranged time and location.

...you want to be the only passenger on this route...
The one thing that seems to throw tourists off the most is the fact that there is no standardization to the taxis here. They range from old American-style cars to new, sleek Japanese sedans in a variety of different colors. Fortunately, most taxis are clearly marked, and those that are not can be identified by their green license plates. This informs passengers that the cab is licensed and legally allowed to operate.
Some drivers will try and pick up as many passengers as possible along the way to make as much money as they can on each trip. For your own safety, make it clear to your driver when you enter the vehicle that you want to be the only passenger on this route, and never get into a cab that already has passengers in it.
Another safety measure to be aware of is the way in which you restrain young children. In Belize, it is perfectly legal for a child to ride in a vehicle without the appropriate safety seat. In order to keep your children as safe as possible, consider bringing your seat from home along with you.
Taxis are not metered in Belize City, nor does the government set rates like many other countries around the world. This means you'll have to discuss the fare with your driver before you start moving. In most cases, you can get around the city for less than $7 per car, though you may be charged an extra $1(USD) per passenger.
Tips are not customary in Belize City, unless the driver takes you on a tour, or does something extra like carries your bags for you. Still, an extra $2(USD) or so is always a welcome gift.
This chart provides some typical cab fares for this area.
|Typical Cost (USD)||Location A||Location B|
|$ 4.35 - $ 5.05||Downtown Belize City||Belize City Municipal Airport|
Taxis are an excellent source of transportation in Belize City, and should be considered as an option for those planning a getaway. If you prefer not to drive yourself around and want more personalized service than what you'd receive taking the bus, this is the most obvious choice.
