An hour outside of the busy Belize City, Belmopan is actually the capital city of the country.  Smaller and quieter than many of the resort towns the coast is known for, this city still has a lot to offer visitors, from museums that touch on local history and culture, to abundance of nature that surrounds.  Stop by the Visitor's Center when you first arrive for maps and inside information about what you absolutely must see before you leave town.

George Price Center for Peace and Development

In case you like to learn about other cultures and places, you might want to visit a museum during your time in Belmopan.

A common landmark for vacationers is George Price Center for Peace and Development. It is located within Belmopan. The centerpiece of the museum are the various exhibits dedicated to George Price and the Independence of Belize. However, the center also hosts various concerts, lecture series, and community improvement programs. Contact them to see if anything special will be occurring during your stay.

Many travelers choose to visit Scenic Hummingbird Highway. It is located in southwestern Belmopan. Perhaps you wouldn't normally include a highway as an attraction, but Hummingbird Highway offers unparalleled views of Belize that are well worth the drive. Connecting Belmopan with Dangriga, this scenic road will take you through dense forests, by small remote villages, up and down mountains, and finally to the coast. If you want to maximize your sight seeing abilities, making a day out of this road and its road side attractions may be the best bet.

Guanacaste National Park

Guanacaste National Park is one of the most enjoyable local attractions. Nature, culture, and history meet at Guanacaste National Park, where visitors can explore the interrelationships of the three and how they have had an effect on Belize.

Heris Nature Park is a second local attraction to consider visiting. With over sixty different species of bird, over 350 species of plants, and plenty of amenities, Heris Nature Park offers a balance between pure nature and tourism friendly services. Whether you want to walk the nature trails, shop for flowers, or plan a wedding, the park will have something for you to partake in.
