Belmopan Car Rentals

If you're going to rent a car in Belize, Belmopan is a great place to do it

In general, renting a car is not recommended for tourists visiting Belize; however, Belmopan is slightly different. This planned community was built in such a way that driving around is much easier here than elsewhere in the country. The only problems you're likely to encounter will come if you're driving to Belmopan from the airport in Belize City, or if you plan on venturing out and exploring other areas.

Renting a Car

In all likelihood, you'll pick up your rental car from the Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport before driving to your accommodations in Belmopan. If this is what you plan to do you'll arrive at the airport, cross the main parking lot, and select your rental agency of choice from the group. If you've got a reservation you'll be able to walk right in, sign some papers, and be on your way. If you decide to rent a car last minute, you may have to visit a few agencies before you find one with an available rental.

As stated, your best bet is to rent your car while in Belize City, or at the airport, where you will have a much better selection. You can click here to visit Belize City's Rental Car Page.

Motor Solutions LTD happens to be the only rental service for which we have information. Reach them at (501) 822-0644, otherwise visit them at 1804 Hummingbird Highway in the eastern part of Belmopan.

In order to rent a car in Belmopan, you will need to be 21 or older and have a valid driver's license from your country of origin or an International Driver's License. This will allow you to drive in Belize for 90 days, after which time you'll need to apply for a local driver's license.

The Cost of Renting a Car

Rental cars may cost anywhere from $60 to $140(USD) a day, depending upon the make and model of the vehicle, extra amenities you request, and whether or not you opt for the insurances (it is recommended that you do). Rates are lower during the summer months when the country is in its rainy season, so if you're looking to save money, this would be the best time for you to rent a car.

...check the vehicle for any damage...

If you do visit during this time, make sure to request a vehicle with four wheel drive and good suspension, like a jeep, so you don't end up stuck in the mud.

Before you leave, make sure to check the vehicle for any damage, including any issues under the hood. Not only will you want to make note so you aren't held responsible for any issues, but you'll also want to ensure the car you're taking off the lot will be up for the task of helping you explore Belmopan.

The rules of the road in Belmopan are not unlike those in the United States. Traffic moves on the right side of the road, seat belts are mandatory, drinking and driving is prohibited, and speed limits are posted in miles per hour rather than kilometers per hour.

As a planned city, Belmopan has some of the best roads in Belize. Located just off Hummingbird Highway, also known of Southern Highway, the town features a circle that goes around town and broad streets in the center. A central market and the bus station sit at the heart of town, just moments from the highway exit. As you drive through town you'll find two gas stations, a few strip malls, the prime minister's office, the post office, and a handful of banks. The roads that take you to and from all of these places are paved, and while there may be a pot hole and speed bump here and there, you shouldn't have too much trouble getting around.

Gas Stations

As you make your way around, be sure to carry cash in local currency on your person. Not all gas stations accept credit cards, and you don't want to be left stranded without gas.

Since you could potentially have difficulties coming across gas stations, take a look at the listing just below for a picture of where some of them are located.

Gas Stations
Name Phone Location
Buca Service Station (501) 822-3948 Constitution Drive - Belmopan
Paochen Texaco Gas Station (501) 802-0240 1 Forest Drive - Belmopan

Transportation is made easier on tourists in Belmopan thanks to the good road conditions and well marked areas. If you're thinking of renting a car to get you around, you'll be hard pressed to find a better location in Belize to do so.
