The rules of the road in Belmopan are not unlike those in the United States. Traffic moves on the right side of the road, seat belts are mandatory, drinking and driving is prohibited, and speed limits are posted in miles per hour rather than kilometers per hour.
As a planned city, Belmopan has some of the best roads in Belize. Located just off Hummingbird Highway, also known of Southern Highway, the town features a circle that goes around town and broad streets in the center. A central market and the bus station sit at the heart of town, just moments from the highway exit. As you drive through town you'll find two gas stations, a few strip malls, the prime minister's office, the post office, and a handful of banks. The roads that take you to and from all of these places are paved, and while there may be a pot hole and speed bump here and there, you shouldn't have too much trouble getting around.
As you make your way around, be sure to carry cash in local currency on your person. Not all gas stations accept credit cards, and you don't want to be left stranded without gas.
Since you might have difficulties finding places to refuel, check out the chart that follows to get an idea where some of them are located.
