Renting a car in Blowing Point is the most recommended option for getting around town, as well as touring the rest of Anguilla. Many tourists are put off by the cost; however, in comparison to what you'll pay for a cab ride, car rentals are a great deal.

Renting a Car

When tourists arrive on the island, it is not common for them to immediately rent a car and take off on an adventure. Instead, most travelers will take a cab from their point of arrival to their accommodations in Blowing Point and have the car delivered directly to them at no charge. This opens up your options quite a bit. The rental agencies in Blowing Point are almost entirely locally owned establishments; however, there are also quite a few international chains throughout the island. Because you don't have to get to your agency of choice to pick up your rental, you can choose to rent from whichever agency you feel most comfortable with.

International agencies are a great choice for travelers who like to stick with a company they are familiar with, and may potentially have a rewards account with, while local agencies on Anguilla are known for their cheaper prices. Another difference between the two options is that the international chains will typically offer newer model vehicles, while local agencies aren't so keen on purchasing new vehicles every year.

Some of the best options available are found within Blowing Point. Although you will not need to drive to get to the agency initially, having the headquarters nearby will save you money on gas should any problems arise with the vehicle.

Not everyone can rent a car on Anguilla. Drivers must be over the age of 25, have a valid driver's license from their country of origin, and purchase a local driving permit. This can be done for just $20(USD) through the rental agency, any port of entry, or the local police department. The permit is valid for three months.

Driving in Blowing Point

The first and most important thing to know about driving in Anguilla is that it is done on the left side of the road, such as it is done in most of Europe. On top of driving on the opposite side of the road, tourists from the United States will also have to get used to the varied road conditions. Due to increased tourism, the island's infrastructure has become a more important priority and new roads are being paved regularly. Blowing Point has a fairly decent road system, though the roads can be narrow, however, if you drive out of town you will likely encounter unpaved dirt roads rife with pot holes. Traffic tends to move slowly, with 30 miles per hour being the average speed on the roads here. There are four roundabouts on the island to help keep things running smoothly in traffic (remember, to drive clockwise through them), and some roads have unmarked speed humps or dips to be on the lookout for.

The Cost of Renting a Car

The range of available vehicles is diverse, with everything from convertibles to vans. Jeeps or any vehicle with four wheel drive are recommended if you plan to do any exploring off the beaten path, but if you're going to keep to Blowing Point throughout your trip, you shouldn't have a problem renting any vehicle that you fancy. Rates range from $40 to $150(USD) a day, with discounts for rentals that are longer than one week. A typical week long rental is just $215(USD).

More Driving Tips

One main road runs the 16 miles from one end of the island to the other, and with the 30 mile per hour speed limit, traffic, and stops, it takes about 30 minutes to drive the entire length. When you travel on unpaved roads, you'll find them to be rocky and narrow, and it is not uncommon to encounter goats crossing the road. Be prepared to stop and wait, as they have the right of way. Because sidewalks are rare, it is also important to be on the lookout for pedestrians at all times.
