Pedro St. James National Historic Site

Standing out amongst the typical thatched-roof shack of the era, Pedro St. James is an opulent three-storey building owned by a wealthy slave owner in the 18th century. In the 1990s, the government purchased the home and transformed it into a museum that shares with visitors the heritage and culture of the Cayman Islands.

Pedro St. James is a living heritage museum. Guests are invited to walk through the property and view the home and grounds as they were during the 18th century, while interacting with actors portraying the people that lived on the Cayman Islands throughout the centuries. Authentic furnishings and tools set the tone.

One of the most poignant moments for many visitors is when they stand upon the Palladian Staircase where, on this property that once harbored slaves, the Proclamation of Emancipation abolishing slavery was first read on the island.
