How to Reach the BVI by Airplane

Flying to the British Virgin Islands may take a little work, but is overall and easy journey

The British Virgin Islands have no large airports, and can only be reached by smaller planes connecting through larger airports. This makes for at least one connection, most likely from the American neighbor.

Getting to the British Virgin Islands is not as easy as visiting their American counterparts, due to a lack of more developed airports. Direct flights often connect in San Juan or St. Thomas. Smaller planes travel from these destinations to airports on Tortola and Virgin Gorda.

Traveler's tip: The British Virgin Islands' airports are small, so arriving passengers typically cannot deplane directly to the terminal. Few airports provide shuttle service, so expect a long walk on the tarmac to the terminal to claim your luggage. If you have a physical ailment that prevents you from walking, be sure to arrange an alternate form of transportation with one of the airline attendants prior to arrival.

Flying to the BVI from the US

Finding a flight from the US to the British Virgin Islands will not be difficult. However, it also will likely not be a direct flight. Flights leave from or connect through San Juan, Puerto Rico, or St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands. From there you can land in Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport.

Flying to the BVI from Canada

Much like the US, Canadian flights generally must come through another Caribbean island, so do not expect to see any direct flights. Still, it will not be hard finding a flight from Canada to large islands like Puerto Rico or the Dominican Republic; neither very far from the British Virgin Islands.

Flying to the BVI from Europe

Just like everyone else, tourists from Europe will need to make a stop in another island.
  • U.K.: Flights connect through Antigua and San Juan.

  • Germany: Flights connect through St. Maarten and San Juan.

  • Switzerland: Flights connect through Antigua

  • Holland and France: Flights connect through St. Maarten.

Air Charters

There is always the option of hiring a charter company to fly you to or around the British Virgin Islands. With flying times that can be personalized and routes that are up to you, charters give the traveler a degree of flexibility many are not used to when it comes to flying. However, there is often a higher cost and longer flights involved. Additionally, those used only to jumbo-jets may find the smaller passenger planes to be a bit scary at first. Below is a list of some of the local options you have when chartering a plane. Keep in mind that you can charter a plane from anywhere, really, and there may be a company in your area willing to make the journey.

The following table enables you to get a hold of one of the regional air charter services.

On a final note, remember that the British Virgin Islands are a foreign terrietory, so Americans will need a passport if they hope to enter the islands. Additionally, as with all international travel, be sure to arrive early and expect delays due to security and immigration procedures.
