With a long history, guests should not miss the opportunity to explore the past of the British Virgin Islands. Tour museums, historical sites, and other landmarks scattered throughout these islands.

Museums

Assuming you enjoy expanding your knowledge of unfamiliar places and cultures, you might want to visit a museum during your time in the BVI. You can click on the museum names to learn full details.

A landmark that often intrigues visitors is VI Maritime Museum. It is a part of H. Lavity Stoutt Community College and located on Tortola, the BVI. The VI Maritime Museum strives to preserve the history of sailing in the British Virgin Islands. Exhibits include boat frames, tools used in the traditional building methods of boat building, artifacts from the 1867 ship wreck the RMS Rhone, two fully built traditional wooden seine boats that almost half a century old, and more.

Another interesting landmark worth visiting is Old Government House Museum. It is found within Road Town, the BVI. Explore the beautiful grounds and building that make up the Old Government House Museum and enjoy pictures of royal visits and occasions that took place here.

1780 Lower Estate Sugar Works Museum: Inside 1780 Lower Estate Sugar Works Museum guests will be treated to a collection of exhibits which display examples of how life was on the island several generations ago. Historical artifacts, relics of daily life, and an exhibit of historic machinery is on display, as is a monthly art selection by a local artist. In addition to culture, the museum also touches on natural history, with a room of photographs discussing animal and plant life throughout the British Virgin Islands.

Historical Sites

Callwood Historic Distillery

If you like to learn about the historical roots of a foreign country, you might want to visit a few of these historical attractions during your time in the BVI.

If you are looking to do some sight-seeing, visit Copper Mine Ruins. It is found within Copper Mine National Park and found on Virgin Gorda, the BVI. Copper was first mined on the island during the 18th century, but it was during the 19th century that Cornish miners built this mine to use for shipments back to Europe. It closed shortly therafter in 1862, and today the ruins make for a great attraction.

A second choice is Little Fort Ruins. It's a historical site The property covers 36 acres on a hillside and includes a small fort, a masonry, and a munitions store. All are in ruins and the entirety of the site is completely undeveloped.

Fort Recovery: Fort Recovery is the oldest standing fort that is still in tact in the Caribbean. Built by the Dutch, it has never been altered or reconstructed, and it does not stand in ruins.
