Restaurant Options in the BVI

It should be of no surprise that casual dining are the norm on the British Virgin Islands

As you review the list of restaurants in the British Virgin Islands, you'll notice something that is quite unique. Almost all are locally owned properties which have successfully flourished amongst locals and tourists without big companies backing them. Although there are a few international chains here and there, for the most part, every meal will be a unique experience as local chefs create dishes unlike any other.

Dining establishments on the British Virgin Islands run the gamut from casual bar and grills to upscale eateries. Still, even the most refined restaurants have a laid back atmosphere that permeates the islands.

Every restaurant throughout the islands has its own individual style, but there are a few things you can expect encounter no matter where you eat. Casual is the name of the game here, and many beachside restaurants have no problem letting customers roam around in just bathing suits. However, you shouldn't expect this to be the case everywhere. Resort casual is a nice compromise for most places on the islands, and dressing to the nines for a date night out at a fancier establishment would certainly not be out of the norm. If you are unsure of what to wear and don't want to offend, simply call ahead and ask for the dress code.

After eating, don't be surprised if a 10 percent gratuity is added to your bill. This is a common practice, however, if the gratuity has not been added you may tip your waiter or waitress accordingly.

Food in the Virgin Islands is influenced by the culinary styles of the world. Restaurants here often serve fusions of French, Italian, Asian, Mexican, and Caribbean food, and barbecue is a favorite as well. Of course, being that these islands are surrounded by waters teaming with fresh fish, seafood is a popular offering in pretty much any restaurant you step in to. While vegetables are available with every meal, you may notice that tropical fruits are just as often on the menu, especially in soups which are made sweet with fruits rather than heavy and hearty with vegetables.

While you're in the island's, however, a great way to get to experience a number of local restaurants all at once is by participating BVI Restaurant Week.  Events include the taste of BVI on Tortola and Virgin Gorda in which restaurants gather together at one venue and offer up samples of their best dishes; the Visiting Chef Cook-Off where two chefs from Tortola and two chefs from Virgin Gorda will compete with a celebrity chef to see who does it better; and finally, the Barefoot Gourmet Soirée.  This takes place at the Peter Island Resort & Yacht Harbour and welcomes guests to sit down for an elegant five-course meal prepared by international and local chefs.  The proceeds go to students interested in pursuing a career in tourism.

European and Asian

If you and your party are in the mood for some European food, you will have several restaurants to choose from nearby. Alongside French food, you can also choose from Italian and Continental options as well.

The Dove has a couple of cuisines to choose from, including Asian Fusion and French. In addition to offering guests that largest wine list in town, this restaurant is also unique for its ever changing small menu, the offerings on which are dictated by which ingredients are readily available locally. The head chef specializes in creating inventive dishes, but the homemade chocolate souffle is without a doubt his best. If you want to call before you go, you can do so at (284) 494-0313.

Brandywine Estate Restaurant is another nearby venue you could visit. One of the most elegant, classy restaurants on the island, this spot is perfect for a romantic night out or when you're looking for haute cuisine. They are located on Sir Francis Drake Highway.

Ginny's: During the coffee shop hours, there are numerous coffee flavors, pastries, sandwiches, and homemade Italian gelato available. For dinner on Friday and Saturday, when Asian is the theme, there is a mixture of Japanese, Thai, and Indian cuisine. They can be found at 2 Wickhams Cay, on Tortola.

Corsairs serves an eclectic menu of Northern Italian fare, Caribbean cuisine, and Tex-Mex, as well as a full bar of funnily named drinks like Pirate Punch and Wench Juice. A worthwhile restaurant in the area you might enjoy is Saba Rock Restaurant. The dinner menu, where each dish is prepared with the freshest available ingredients features seafood and grill favorites, including conch pasta, barbecue ribs, and steak. Although the spot is renowned for their burgers you won't find a single one on their main menu. If you are looking to call before you go, you can do so at (284) 495-7711.

American and Other

Myett's Garden Grille

There are a handful of locations offering eclectic food in the BVI. In addition to that, guests are able to choose from eclectic and American cuisine, as well as other options.

Foxy's Taboo Restaurant is a bar and grill Jost Van Dyke, in western the BVI. The island's newest hot spot, this bar and grill is always busy with customers who like to have fun and know they'll find it here. It doesn't hurt that the food is good and the bar never seems to close.

A dining venue worth thinking about is Myett's Garden Grille. Since 1992 Garden and Grille Restaurant has served the Cane Garden Bay area of Tortolla for more than a decade, and knows how to provide excellent service. Pair that with a menu of mouthwatering items prepared by Jamaican chef Wasbaur and the beautiful setting, and you have a restaurant you can't pass up during your time on the island.

The Crawl Pub: In addition to being a popular bar on the property of the Bitter End Yacht Club, the Crawl Pub also has a full kitchen equipped for lunch and dinner. Guests at the club and passersby are welcome to stop in to have a drink and watch the game, or order a full meal. If you're looking for something specific, call them at (800) 872-2392.

Anegada Reef Hotel Restaurant is a restaurant with a casual theme Setting Point, in northeastern the BVI. The restaurant at the Anegada Reef Hotel serves all three meal a day to guests as they dine outdoors with the sun overhead and the sand at their feet. You can call them at (284) 495-8002.

When dining on Virgin Gorda it is important to procure reservations simply because there are so few restaurants available. Restaurants on Jost Van Dyke are popular with the sailing set, offering travelers the chance to swap stories or just listen in, and on Anegada, only six to 10 restaurants are usually open at any given time of year.

If you have not yet booked your stay, you may want to take dining into consideration before you do. Many resorts and hotels having dining on site, and the type of food they serve may just influence your final decision.

Whether you're looking for casual eating or a refined spot for a quiet, and perhaps romantic, meal, the dining establishments throughout the British Virgin Islands can easily accommodate your needs. Although some islands have fewer restaurants than others, the variety is enough that everyone will find something to satisfy their dining style.
