Calibishie, located on Dominica's north coast, is a sleepy fishing village frequented by tourists who prefer a quiet vacation. Here, you'll get a glimpse of what the laid back Caribbean lifestyle is truly like, and unfortunately that means more rugged terrain. For this reason, renting a vehicle for the area is not recommended for first time drivers on the island. Fortunately, taxi drivers can pick up the slack and take you where you need to go.
Because Calibishie is less tourist-driven than some of the other areas on the island, it is less likely that you'll see a cab on the street as you tour the area. For this reason, it is helpful to have a list of contact numbers on hand. You can always called the Dominica Taxi Association at 767-449-8533 for information.
is the only taxi service for which we have detailed info. Give them a call at (767) 445-5299; you'll find them on Picard in Portsmouth, 7.1 mi. west of Calibishie.
When you do see a taxi on the street, you may find it difficult to recognize it because they are likely styled differently than the cabs you'd see back home. Taxis here are actually minibuses that stand out in the crowd thanks to the letters “H” or “HA” on the license plate. Drivers also wear uniforms and keep their credentials posted in the front of the vehicle. The combination of these attributes lets you know that you have encountered an officially licensed taxi.
The great thing about taxis in Calibishie is the straight forward pricing. They are not metered and have rates set in advance by the government so there is never any confusion about how much it will get you to get from one place to the next. You can, and should, get into the cab and ask your driver the price so you know before you take off how much you'll be required to pay when you reach your destination.
Wanting to know what taxis cost? Take a look at the following table.
|Typical Cost (USD)||Location A||Location B|
|$ 15.00 - $ 20.00||Douglas-Charles Airport||Calibishie|
Don't forget to tip your driver. A gratuity of between 15 and 20 percent is the common payment on the island.
In addition to being people-movers, taxi drivers in Calibishie also serve as great tour guides. Because the drivers have almost always grown up on the island, they have local insight that many tourists crave from their guides, yet offer pricing that is much lower than your typical guided tour at between $70 and $90(USD) for up to five hours. Even if you rent a car, many previous tourists will recommend that you get in a cab at least once for the tour guide experience.
As you probably noted as you read above, the price of hailing a cab in Calibishie can add up quickly if you use it as your sole form of transportation. Still, with the rugged roadways and ease of travel, many tourists agree that this is the best way to get around the island.
