The Caribbean islands attract birdwatchers, hikers, cyclists, and history buffs alike. Whether you'd like a full agenda of sightseeing or a leisurely vacation of discovery, you can be sure that unique architecture, vibrant sounds, pleasant aromas and captivating sites will surround you, engaging all of your senses and creating a most memorable experience.

You can taste "coco frio" (cold coconut water), or visit the observatory where the world's largest radio telescope seeks out extraterrestrial life. You'll enjoy breathtaking views almost everywhere you go, whether you explore the sites on your own or opt to take a guided tour. The past and present beautifully meld together in the Caribbean. Today, local artisans are carving seder plates from seashells, while a thousand years ago, Arawak Indians carved fertility amulets from seashells. Use the links below to jump right to the kind of landmarks you will want to visit, and see what is in store.

Museums

Some tourists might balk at the idea of spending any of their vacation indoors combing through old relics, but in truth, one of the best ways to find out what is important to local culture is by stepping foot inside a museum. The types of museums throughout the Caribbean are so varied, that likely there is a topic to interest every visitor. Some unique examples include the Cricket Legends Museum in Barbados which discusses the history of the popular sport on the island; the Aruba Aloe Balm Museum where you’ll learn about the island’s aloe industry; and the world-famous Bob Marley Museum in Jamaica. Of course, there are plenty of historical, cultural, and visual arts museums throughout the region as well.

There are some towns and cities throughout the region that are especially notable for tourists interested in touring museums such as Old San Juan, Puerto Rico and Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. These towns are not only the two oldest continuous cities in the new world, but they are also very walkable and filled with museums and many other historic attractions. Kingston, Jamaica, though it may not have the same feel as Old San Juan and Santo Domingo also has a collection of great museums that are worth visiting.

Take a look at the list below for an idea of which museums are recommended for you to see in the Caribbean.

Historic Landmarks

The Caribbean has a rich and varied history--from pre-colonial settlements by Carib, Arawak and Taino Indians, to European exploration--that is strongly influenced by the African slave culture. On the islands, you can learn about pirates, missionaries and slave revolts through museums and local folklore exhibits. You can also observe many historic structures such as French provincial architecture in Guadeloupe, Danish-influenced buildings in Aruba, historic churches and cemeteries on the Virgin Islands, and ancient ruins throughout the region. Visiting an archaeological dig can be a great way to really participate in discovering Caribbean history, and a stroll down the oldest street or a visit to first shrine in the new world can make you feel as though you've been transported back in time.

Chichen Itza

The Ruinas del Rey in Cancun date from the third to the second century B.C. The ruins have two plazas instead of the traditional one and a pyramid, which is assumed to be a royal burial site. 48503, another significant ruin site, was likely still inhabited when the Spanish arrived in 1518. The Temple of the Wind is another great site because it has one of the best views around.

In the aforementioned Zona Colonial of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, you'll find Fort San Felipe, the oldest fort in the new world, and the Catedral de Santa Maria la Menor, the oldest cathedral. You can also explore the ruins of the first hospital and first monastery in the Caribbean. Take a horse-drawn carriage through this area for an up-close and unobstructed view of each sight.

Fort San Cristóbal

In San Juan, Puerto Rico you'll find the oldest church, the oldest castle and fortress, and the first executive mansion. Ponce de León, who searched in vain for the Fountain of Youth, is interred here in a vault in the San Juan Cathedral. There is also a printing museum in San Juan that houses an important collection of old and rare books--many of the volumes were printed before the year 1500. Ride the trolley through this area to add a little fun to your exploration adventure.

Fort Zoutman in Oranjestad, Aruba was the first building built on the island after the Dutch permitted settlement. It remains the oldest standing building on the island and houses the Museo Historico, which contains a collection of historic Aruban artifacts mostly donated by locals.

Fort Fincastle

Fort Fincastle, one of three forts in the Bahamas, was built in Nassau in 1793, and is known for its odd shape; the fort comes to a point like a ship and has a water tower. Nearby is the Queen's Staircase, a monument of 65 limestone steps created in the 18th century to honor the rein of Queen Elizabeth.

Kingston, Jamaica packs more historical sites than imaginable into the city considering its size. There are plantations, such as the Bloomfield Great House coffee plantation, forts, like Fort Charles, and much more. St. Peter's Church, Devon House Heritage Site, the Bob Marley Museum, and Port Royal are other landmarks.

Lighthouses

Cabo Rojo Lighthouse

As you can imagine because they are surrounded by ocean and sea, lighthouses have played an important role in keeping the people of the Caribbean isles safe. As technology has grown, many lighthouses have fallen out of use and into disrepair, but each tells its own story of lives it has saved and lost in perilous conditions. For this reason, lighthouses are often on the must-see list for many tourists who visit the Caribbean.

Even if you're not a lighthouse buff, many are located at the end of scenic hiking trails, giving hikers something to look forward to along their routes. If you were to view a list of some of the top lighthouse treks in the Caribbean, several of Puerto Rico's beacons would likely be noted. The Arecibo Lighthouse is high on the list, followed by the Cabo Rojo Lighthouse, and including the El Morro Lighthouse. All three of these, and several others on the island, are not only things of beauty themselves, but offer grounds that look out over some of the most breath taking views one might hope to see.

Barbados also has a nice selection of lighthouses to visit, some dating back to 1851, and rarely younger than a century old. Their lights range from stationary to rotating, and each has individualized designs that range from bright and striped like the South Point Lighthouse to the tiny Needham's Point Lighthouse.Jamaica and St. Lucia are other notable islands if lighthouse hikes are your passion.

Below is a more in depth list of some of these watchdogs.

Monuments

Port of Spain Landmarks

When important events or people in history have touched or changed a town or even a nation, you can bet that there will be a monument created to honor it or them. Around the Caribbean there are dozens of monuments that touch on political revolution, scientific achievement, and even the hard work of locals.

If monuments truly move you, the Dominican Republic is a great destination for you. This is a country that loves to commemorate people and events with a statue or a plaque. For example, the Monumento A Los Héroes De La Restauración and the Monumento Hermanas Mirabal both remind locals of the trials they faced during the reign of Rafael Trujillo, while the Arco de Triufuno is a tribute to the resilient spirit of the Dominican people despite all they have suffered, and the Constituents Monument honors the constitution and the freedom that it represents.

Some of the more unique monuments throughout the region include the 3Ws Monument on Barbados, which honors three popular cricket players, the Cabillito de Mar in San Juan, Puerto Rico which is shaped like a seahorse, and the Dolphin Fountain in Heroes Square in Bridgetown which was erected to commemorate the achievement of piped water on the island.

If you have a chance to visit just one of the monuments listed below, you will be better for it.

Breweries and Distilleries

Appleton Estate Rum Distillery

Rum is almost synonymous with the Caribbean, something you’ll pick up on immediately upon entering any bar where a great deal of mixed drinks have a rum base. This is because many of the countries in the Caribbean easily produce sugar cane, which is a main ingredient in rum. Rum distilleries and breweries exist on many islands in the region, including landmarks, Barbados, and St. Kitts, and plenty of them offer tours that detail the history of rum making. Brewery tours can be a great way to stay active and involved on a particularly hot day; plus, most end with a sample of the brewery's main product.

One of the most popular brewery tours is the Cruzan Rum Factory tour on St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands. If you sign up for this tour, you'll be encouraged to pay special attention to the windmill which aids heavily in production, and you'll be awarded with a sample when you come to the end. The Appleton Estate Rum Distillery on Jamaica is another great one because they focus not only on present day production, but how the rum was made when the distillery originally opened over 200 years ago -- some of the original equipment is even still on hand!

If you prefer to visit as many distilleries as possible in one country, Guadelloupe has a record seven distillery tours including one on Marie Galante, and there are two on Barbados including the Mount Gay Rum Distillery.

Even More to See . . .

The great thing about the Caribbean is the variety of sites to see. Not all of them fall into the above categories, but are absolutely still worth mentioning. Many of them fall under the category of "adventure tourism," like the Morne Coubaril Estate on St. Lucia and the Pauhana Surf School in Puerto Plata on the Dominican Republic. Others are factory tours like Marie Sharp's Factory in Dangriga, Belize which offers a lesson in heat as you explore the place some of the region's best hot sauce is produced. Some are just plain fun, like the St. Maarten Carousel. Check below for a list of these important sites.

Other Landmarks
Name Phone Location Island
New World Museum (242) 323-3182 Cockburn Town San Salvador Island
Sint Maarten Carousel (721) 544-2112 Cole Bay the island of St. Martin and Sint Maarten

With such a wide variety of landmarks to see, the only thing that remains the same throughout the Caribbean is that the sites you see are sure to amaze you, take your breath away, or inspire awe.
