On the small island of Caye Caulker, full-sized vehicles are prohibited. This means no buses, no taxis, and of course, no rental cars. This does not meant you'll have to walk everywhere, though it is certainly possible. Islanders have learned to get around this rule by riding bikes and driving golf carts.
Most hotels and rental properties include the use of bicycles for their guests in the cost of the room, so this is how many people choose to get around the island. If you're staying at a place that doesn't offer this perk, you can rent from one of several bicycle rental shops on Front Street.
If having four motorized wheels on hand is important to you, there are a handful of golf cart rental agencies also on Front Street. You'll pay somewhere between $60 and $80(USD) a day for a four- or six-seaters. Rentals are available by the hour, daily, or for extended periods. If you choose to rent a golf cart, keep in mind that they are battery operated, and you'll only have a few hours of driving time before you need to plug the cart in and charge it up.

There are three roads on Caye Caulker: Front Street, Middle Street, and Back Street. None of them are paved, but without any cars on the roads, they don't really need to be. You can get around fairly easily on bike and golf carts, and a tour around the entire island will only take about 35 minutes.
In order to maintain the natural integrity of the island, the people of Caye Caulker have had to sacrifice the use of regular-sized motor vehicles, but people rarely seem to mind. This is thanks to the understanding that this is what it takes to keep the island beautiful, and of course, the fact that other options like bikes and golf carts are available.
