Not particularly large itself, Charlestown is generally explored on foot. However, as most people will be arriving first through the ferry dock on the Northside of Nevis, some form of transportation is needed. Renting a car will let you explore no only Charlestown, but also the rest of Nevis that few see.
It is important to note that here are no rental car agencies located directly at the ferry docks or at the airport, though there are some nearby each. Most agencies offer a pick-up and drop-off service to help tourists avoid having to pay for a taxi, so make sure you ask if this will be an option for you.
Since the rental agencies do deliver, it does not matter much where exactly they are located. While you might want to deal with them in person, the agencies will be well equipped to handle all the paper work and details over the phone or in person once they deliver the vehicle.

The cost of a rental car is not terribly high in the grand scheme of things, but it will be a large part of your travel budget at between $40 and $60(USD) a day. Everyone who plans to drive the vehicle will also have to put down $24(USD) for a local driver's permit, which can be purchased through your rental car agency when you pick up your rental.
When you get on the road in Charlestown, be sure to keep to the left side of the road and look out for pedestrians and pot holes in the streets. The roads here are not terribly well maintained, so you'll always want to be aware of what's going on around you.
