Set in a building built in 1803 as the barracks for the personal guard of the Danish colonial governor, this bright and cheery bed and breakfast is located in the oldest part of town. Surrounded by beautiful historic buildings and featuring a gorgeous view of the St. Thomas Harbor, it features a casual atmosphere that provides guests with a relaxing stay and a great home base for exploring the island.

Despite being home to the largest cruise port in the Caribbean, knowledgeable visitors realize Charlotte Amalie is also a great choice for those seeking tranquility and quiet beauty. This B&B; is perfectly situated in an area that offers the cultural authenticity of a colonial Caribbean port town, and the convenience of being just minutes away from shopping, restaurants and attractions.

At Home can also be a good place for those hoping to relax after dinner. Happy Buzzard is one such after-hours destination, but there are plenty of other options in this general area.

Set on the northeastern part of downtown Charlotte Amalie, At Home in the Tropics Bed & Breakfast offers a warm welcome to travelers who are interested in basing their vacation in this neighborhood. The center of Havensight is less than a mile (a kilometer and a half) to the southeast.

Accommodations

There are four unique guestrooms in At Home in the Tropics, though all have beautiful French doors and shutters for privacy at night. Rooms one and two both have king beds and share the upper deck. Room three has a queen bed and is near the pool. Room four is located at the end of the house and has a king bed. All rooms have a two night minimum stay.

At Home has a grand total of 4 units, so we classify it as a very small property. Accordingly, it is popular with travelers who prefer a less commercialized setting. With respect to overall quality, we've given this B & B a rating of 3 stars.

Activities and Recreation at At Home in the Tropics Bed & Breakfast

Although the swimming pool area is used for breakfast in the morning, throughout the rest of the day it is a great gathering space for guests to relax, read a book, surf the internet using the complimentary wifi, or socialize with other guests.

The pool area includes three decks with chaise lounges, bistro sets, and comfy wicker chairs. Two of the decks are covered for shade, and the other is perfect for enjoying the tropical sun. The entire area provides an ideal setting for experiencing outdoor living, enjoying the views or just relaxing after a busy day shopping and exploring.

The part of town they are located in is the oldest, directly up from Fort Christian and it is great for cultural exploration. There is a historic walking tour that starts at Blackbeard's Castle just above them. They are surrounded by beautiful historical buildings, step streets, and parks such as Government House and its garden, Crown House, the Lutheran and Reformed Church parsonages, the Frederick Lutheran Church, Emancipation Garden, Roosevelt Park, 99 Steps, and more.
