Most tourists arrive in Charlotte Amalie by air, then use the plentiful array of local ferry services to make day trips to other parts of the Virgin Islands. However, the ferries are also used as the final leg of the journey to St. John, and even to some of the nearby British Virgin Islands.

Riding the Ferries

On occasion the Charlotte Amalie Ferry Terminal also serves as a port of entry for visitors traveling from the British Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and beyond. Although there is no ferry service currently in operation between St. Croix and St. Thomas, St. John depends on ferries from St. Thomas to connect tourists to the island. If you are thinking about day tripping in the reverse direction, traveling by ferry to Charlotte Amalie, it is most likely you will be coming from Puerto Rico or the British Virgin Islands.

The ferry from Fajardo, Puerto Rico is called Transportation Services. The schedule and pricing changes so regularly that it is hard to keep up. If you plan to take the two hour ferry, your best bet is to call the company at 340-776-6282 to get up-to-date details.

Check the following chart for ferry details.

If your ultimate destination is a resort on St. John, you may have noticed quite a number of ferries to choose from. One resort, The Westin St. John Resort, even has its own private ferry service that takes guests to and from the resort. Even if you are not a guest of an all-inclusive, you will have no problem finding another St. John bound ferry.

Remember, those traveling to or from the British Virgin Islands will have to be prepared with their passport in order to gain entry.
