1 | House Of The Deer

The House of the Deer was once the scientific center of the Chichen Itza. It was here that Mayas carried out research and experiments.

Situated within Chichen Itza, this historical site is located a mile and a half (two kilometers) southeast of Hacienda Chichen Resort.

2 | Chichen Viejo (Old Chichen)

Characterized by numerous representations of the Maya god Chaac, Chichen Viejo is a ruins site near the much more popular Chichen Itza. It is believed to have been built in 400 A.D., and at this time archeologists are still excavating the site, so it is closed to the public.

House Of The Deer is a half mile (a kilometer) to the north of this historical site.

3 | Red House

Filled with hieroglyphs stretching across the walls, the Red House contains historical records that mention to rulers as far back at 869 AD, which is the earliest date found so far in the ruin complex.

This historical site is on the same premises as Chichen Itza, and is only 0.6 miles (0.9 km) from Chichen Viejo (Old Chichen).

4 | Church (La Iglesia)

While researchers still do not know what this building was used for, the Spanish saw fit to name it "La Iglesia" or " The Church", and it is still called that today.

5 | Nunnery

This historical site is within Chichen Itza.

6 | Ossuary

What appears to be a miniature version of "El Castillo" is actually a type of grave stone, as the seven pyramid levels signify seven burials. Inside the pyramid is a shaft that leads to an underground cavern full of skeletons.

7 | El Caracol

This early observatory has windows that line up with different constellations at different parts of the year, allowing the Mayas to keep track of the seasons. In addition to the stars, the Mayas also tracked the sun, allowing them to predict the seasons and best harvesting time.

8 | Ball Court Chichen

This playing field of an old Maya game still stands, and used to be a very important part of Maya ceremonial life. After the games, one of the teams was sacrificed, however, researchers are still not sure if it was the losers or the winners who were killed.

9 | Akab-Dzib

The least visited of the Chichen Itza ruins, the name translates roughly to "The House of Mysterious Writing", and was believed to have been the administrative house of Chichen.

10 | Plattform Of The Skulls (Tzompantli)

Interested visitors can find this historical site within the grounds of Chichen Itza.

11 | El Castillo

The main feature in Chichen Itza, El Castillo is a large temple that was once the center of life for the Maya people, perhaps between the ninth and 12th centuries. Today it helps researchers and visitors learn about the Mayas who once lived here.

12 | Chichen Itza

One of the Seven Wonders of the World as of 2007, Chichen Itza is perhaps the most popular and well-known Maya ruin in the Mexican Caribbean. The fact that it is so well known today is not surprising, considering in its heyday it was one of the most important religious and political centers of the culture.

This historical site is located less than a hundred yards (less than a hundred meters) from El Castillo.

13 | The Sacred Cenote

The Sacred Cenote is a pool of water believed to have been a sacrificial well for the Mayas. It is said that they would paint the children they would sacrifice to the god blue, and then toss them into the cenote.

14 | Colonnades

The Romans and Greeks weren't the only column builders. Part of the greater Chichen Itza ruins, these columns give insight into the kind of complicated structures completed by the Mayas.

15 | Temple Of The Warriors

Perhaps the only known Maya structure large enough to be able to hold a large crowd indoors, the Temple of the Warriors is just one of many structures in the expansive Chichen Itza Park.

16 | Stacked Stones

Visitors will find this historical site within the grounds of Chichen Itza.

17 | Steam Bath

While the archaeologist do not know for sure, it is suspected that this building once served as a type of sauna. They draw this conclusion due to the low door that would require anyone coming in to crawl (also keeping hot air in)

19 | Cenote Zaci

Conveniently located right in the center of the city of Valladolid, Cenote Zaci is raved about by families who love swimming in the crystalline cool waters.

Hacienda Chichen Resort is 25 miles (40 and a half kilometers) west of this park.

20 | La Rafaelita

From Cenote Zaci, go a mile and a half (two and a half kilometers) west to find this historical site.

21 | Francisco Canton Park

Interested visitors can find this park in the heart of Valladolid, one and an eighth miles (a kilometer and a half) east of La Rafaelita.

22 | San Roque Museum

Originally constructed in 1575 as a church, the San Roque Museum tells the history of the region with a special focus on Maya life.

This museum is located a few hundred yards (a quarter kilometer) from Francisco Canton Park, and is at 193 Calle 41.

23 | Viajes Valladolid

Situated in the heart of the town of Valladolid, this excursions and sightseeing service is located a few hundred yards (a quarter kilometer) from San Roque Museum.

25 | San Bernardino Monastery

This old monastery may look like a place where time stands still, but monasteries like these helped Catholicism spread throughout the Spanish Colonies, spreading the Hispanic Culture with it. This particular San Bernardino Monastery is still a center of Catholic worship in the region, and plays a large part in the local culture.

This historical site is located at 238 Calle 49, and is less than a mile away from Swiming Pools/Water Park.

26 | Ik Kil Cenote

Part of the Il Kil Archeological Park which is also home to a popular Maya Ruin, the Il Kil Cenote is open to the public for swimming and is commonly included as a part of area tours.

Head southeast for three and a half miles (five and a half kilometers) from Hacienda Chichen Resort to find this park.

27 | Dzitnup Cenote

Natural cenotes dot the landscape of the Mexican Caribbean, and are popular spots for tourists and locals alike who love swimming and diving, but want to avoid the beach. Dzitnup Cenote is one such spot.

This park is located within easy traveling distance of Valladolid, 22.2 miles (35.7 km) to the east of Hacienda Chichen Resort.

28 | Sac Muukal Cenote

Dzitnup Cenote is located a few hundred yards (a quarter kilometer) to the northwest of this park.
