Built in 1841, the Customs House used to be the center for tax collection in the city. Later it would serve as a post office, then a library. Today the Customs House stands simply as part of Historic Christiansted, and is closed to the public.
Although the Customs House is closed to the public, it is popular amongst tourists who can't seem to get over the architectural beauty. This spot is often filled with visitors snapping pictures on the sweeping staircase that leads to the entrance.
Set between the Scale House and Fort Christiansvaern, the Customs House mixed European and Island styles of architecture to create a mansion-sized building recognized for its sweeping 16-step staircase, sunshine yellow paint, and green shutters.
Downtown Christiansted is a good option for those wishing to visit Customs House, because those staying in this part of the Virgin Islands will have convenient access to the historical site throughout their trip.
