Customs House

Built in 1841, the Customs House used to be the center for tax collection in the city. Later it would serve as a post office, then a library. Today the Customs House stands simply as part of Historic Christiansted, and is closed to the public.

What to Expect

Although the Customs House is closed to the public, it is popular amongst tourists who can't seem to get over the architectural beauty. This spot is often filled with visitors snapping pictures on the sweeping staircase that leads to the entrance.

Set between the Scale House and Fort Christiansvaern, the Customs House mixed European and Island styles of architecture to create a mansion-sized building recognized for its sweeping 16-step staircase, sunshine yellow paint, and green shutters.

Staying Close

Customs House is located in downtown Christiansted, so visitors to this area of the Virgin Islands will be pleased to have easy access to this historic attraction during their visit. There isn't much congestion in the area near the historic site, perhaps because there are so few hotels close.
