Ferries to Coral Bay

While most people need ferries to reach Coral Bay, they will be just one part of the trip

Even though there is no actual ferry that goes straight into Coral Bay, the majority of travelers coming to the small town will be required to use one. Luckily, Coral Bay's sibling, Cruz Bay, has a developed ferry system, and is located on the opposite end of the St. John. While there is a bit of distance between the two bays, the tourist centric Cruz Bay will have plenty of transport options to get you across the island.

Riding the Ferries

Ferries into St. John will start on one of four islands, St. Thomas or the British Virgin Islands of Tortola, Jost Van Dyke, and Anegada. If you decide to come from (or go to) the British side, just make sure you have your passport.

Otherwise, flying to St. Thomas is just the first step to getting to Coral Bay. From there, your next course of action is to take a taxi to either the Red Hook Ferry Terminal or the Charlotte Amalie Ferry Terminal.

The trip to Red Hook takes 25 minutes and costs between $11 and $15(USD) per person by taxi, and once you arrive you'll find that there are a collection of different ferry companies that offer service to St. John. Three of them are actually car barges, so if you've rented a car that allows transport to St. John, you can drive aboard the ship and ride that way for around $50(USD). Otherwise, the regular ferries, which run almost hourly, cost about $6(USD) per person each way.  Most ferries take 20 minutes to cross, but in 2014 a new fast ferry service became available offering trips in under 10 minutes.  The boats are clalled the Red Hook I and the Cruz Bay I, and are catamarans that can hold up to 204 passengers each.

The trip from the Charlotte Amalie Ferry Terminal, on the other hand, is 45 minutes long and costs $12(USD) per person each way. There is currently just one ferry that offers continuous service from Charlotte Amalie to St. John, and it takes about 10 minutes in a $6 to $7(USD) cab per person to get there.
