It may not be what first comes to mind you you picture a tropical beach, but exploring Playa Xhanan is a great way to learn more about the area.

The snack bar located at this spot is perfect for quick lunches and cold drinks, too. You might also have the option to buy food from one of the local vendors who typically operate along this coastline.

Unfortunately, you won't find any public restrooms along this coastline, which is something to consider if you plan to spend a full day in the sun. Due to the rough terrain of Playa Xhanan beach, the majority of beachgoers found here are locals with four-wheel drive vehicles or tourists who have rented ATVs.

Playa Xhanan brings visitors a quiet and relaxing place to escape, since the area surrounding the beach is more rural than urban.

Cities and Towns

It may take some traveling to get there, but Playa del Carmen, about 22 miles away, is the closest population center. although you may find some smaller residential areas nearer to the beach.


The number of other vacationers sharing this coastline can vary widely, depending on everything from the time of day to how packed the nearby hotels are.

Don't expect to find any of Cancun and the Mexican Caribbean's popular resorts close to this beach, but if you're looking to dodge masses of travelers, the lack of accommodation options will surely be a welcomed sight.


There aren't any restaurants right on this location, so it would be a good idea to pack a lunch if you want to fully enjoy your time spent at the beach.

There are multiple beaches to discover on Cozumel, of course, and Playa Xhanan is just one option.

You might also enjoy Sunset Beach, which also offers sufficient opportunities to relax. Others might prefer Playa Bonita, which could provide a little more opportunity for excitement, and is closer to other tourist hot-spots. It's located four miles to the south-southwest.

Travelers may also want to consider Santa Pilar, which is located just a cab ride away. Although there is little privacy on the Santa Pilar beach, vacationers staying at nearby hotels and resorts will love the convenient location of these shores.

Maybe Playa Xhanan is a perfect spot for you to kick back, and at the same time perhaps not the the ideal fit; in which case there are other beaches (and other outdoor attractions) worth trying.
