Cruz Bay Ferries

Ferries are the number one way to reach Cruz Bay

Arriving on St. John via ferry is very easy to do, especially if you are coming from either St. Thomas or the British Virgin Islands. As such, it is also easy to visit any of these places once in Cruz Bay via Ferry. While competing with Red Hook as Ferry Hub of USVI, there is no denying that ferries and Cruz Bay simply go together.

Riding the Ferries

Once your flight has landed, the next step is to take a ferry to St. John, which is just four miles off the east coast of St. Thomas. The Red Hook Ferry Terminal traveling across Pilsbury Sound is the most direct route, offering several ferries that take 20 minutes to get to Cruz Bay for around $6(USD) a person.  In June of 2014, Varlack Ventures and Transportation Services joined forces to offer two new ferries called Red Hook I and Cruz Bay I which can travel between the two islands in just seven to 10 minutes.  You can get to Red Hook by taxi for between $11 and $15(USD) per person, where you will find that there are multiple ferries that run throughout the day. Three of these ferries are actually barges that transport vehicles between the two islands for around $50(USD).

The other option is to sail from the Charlotte Amalie Ferry Terminal. The taxi ride is cheaper, costing between $6 and $7(USD) per person, but the ferry takes 45 minutes to get to Cruz Bay, and it costs $12(USD).

As mentioned, it is also possible to visit the British Virgin Islands from Cruz Bay. Ferries will take you to three of the British Islands; the popular Tortola and Jost Van Dyke, and the elusive Anegada (most BVI ferry docks do not even have service to Anegada). While this leaves out Virgin Gorda, it is easy enough to simply head to Tortola and use a different ferry line.
