For many visitors to the island of St. John, Cruz Bay serves as their home base for exploration.  This is true for those who are planning an eco-adventure, or simply like to get outdoors and explore nature's bounty.  Within easy driving distance you'll find a great many natural attractions, including waterfalls, a reserve, parks, and waterways.

Nature Preserves and Hiking

Virgin Islands National Park

Do you like spending time seeing the local flaura and fauna? You can experience a few different hiking trails and some nature preserves near Cruz Bay.

Virgin Islands National Park is a nature preserve situated 3.2 mi. East of central Cruz Bay. There are no designated entrances into the Virgin Islands National Park, but Route 20 from the ferry dock will take you to the Visitors Center.

Travelers hoping to locate a another great natural attraction should consider visiting choices like Virgin Islands Coral Reef National Monument. Virgin Islands Coral Reef National Monument is a protected area that was set up to preserve the marine life off the coast of St. John. Specifically, this spot protects a mangrove habitat, the surrounding reef system, and Hurricane Hole.

Waterfalls

Even though most travelers are attracted by the region's beaches, that isn't the only way to enjoy the area's natural wonders. One such example is Petroglyph Pool Waterfall. It is found 3.1 mi. East of central Cruz Bay. <p>Deep in the Virgin Islands National Park among tall trees, crumpling ruins, and centuries-old carvings you will be able to spot the Petroglyph Pool Waterfall. This tall fall cascades down to fill a pool that is famous for something more than the waterfall alone.</p>

Parks

Travelers can also experience the local park in Cruz Bay.

Franklin Powell Park is found in downtown Cruz Bay. Located close to the ferry dock, Franklin Powell Park is a popular place for both locals and tourist to walk through and relax. You will find plenty of room to walk and some great spots where you can sit and people-watch, and a nice selection of stores and restaurants nearby that provide plenty of options for spending a relaxing few hours while waiting for your ferry, or just enjoying a tropical afternoon.
