The waters of St. John tend to be calm even when the day is windy, and there is no denying the scenery is unmatched. For this reason, and many others, sailing is a very popular pastime for those who plan a vacation in Cruz Bay.
If you're just wanting to enjoy some time on the water, without the cost and responsibility of sailing on your own you can take an excursion. See the chart that follows to obtain information on area day sailing companies.

Yachters who choose to sail to St. John end up in Cruz Bay by default, since this is the official port of entry and the location of customs for St. John. Sailors must clear customs before they can cruise (permit free) around the rest of the island, though many choose to stick close by for the majority of their stay.
There are no marinas in Cruz Bay, but there are two designated anchorages, one in Cruz Bay and one just around the bend at Chocolate Hole. In addition to these anchorages, there are some moorings set up by the Friends of the National Park Organization that are available for free moorings during the day. Overnight moorings must be permitted and will be charged. To find out the locations of Cruz Bay's moorings you can call the Department of Planning and Natural Resources at 340-774-3320 or 340-775-6762. They can also answer any questions you might have about sailing restrictions in and around Cruz Bay.
