A well known kayaking spot, Playa Luis Pena's clear calm ocean is the perfect shove off point for anyone looking to explore the tropical waters of Puerto Rico. Don't worry if you're not into kayaking though, this beautiful beach works just fine for sun-tanning and swimming.
Set on the island of Isla de Culebra, You should think about stopping by whether or not you are staying nearby. Playa Luis Pena stands out from other beaches because it's the ideal location for getting away from vacation stresses, like overly crowded restaurants and attractions. Many of the other beaches in Puerto Rico may be just as beautiful, but tend to be more crowded since they're found in the most popular parts of town.
With no development on the island, the only way to get to Playa Luis Pena is via watercraft.
Located just off the coast of Culebra and in a cove, Playa Luis Pena is well protected from the rough waters that can be in the are, making it a great beach for swimming and playing in the water. Land landlubbers can also explore the natural island, as much of it is untouched. Just be care, while it is not a large island, the dense fores is easy to get lost in.
Keep in mind that restrooms won't be found on-site, which is something to consider if you plan to spend a full day in the sun. You'll find the waters off-shore to be fit for snorkeling, so grab your equipment if you're hoping to find some interesting marine life.
The beach is wonderful, but the surrounding area has a lot to offer, too. Look for it on the West coast of Isla de Culebra. It is close to Flemenco Tank, which is seen a mile and a half away, and it is one of a few the area's interesting attractions.
To some, beaches and museums may seem an odd combination, but plenty of visitors find that museums like Culebra Museum (located a short cab ride away) offer rare insight into Caribbean life and a new way to experience Puerto Rico's culture.
