Snorkeling Around Diamante

For the most part, Diamante experiences water conditions that are just slightly rougher than a snorkeler would find to be ideal.  This doesn't mean that breaking out your snorkel and mask is impossible when you visit the town, but you will have to be a bit more selective as you choose where to make use of your gear.

Although it is not recommended, it is not uncommon to see snorkelers out at Diamond Rock.  This is a very well-known dive spot on the island, and snorkelers often tag along because the visibility is so great that they hope to see if they can catch a glimpse of the volcanic material that the rock is comprised of, plus the sea fans and corals that are sch a major draw.  Unfortunately,  this can be a risky venture even for scuba divers because of the current.

It is best to head to the island's east coast.  This is where the best snorkeling exists.  Sainte Anne Reefs and Anse Mabouyas are nearby, and great spots to participate in the sport, as are Point du Bout Eastern Bay, Petite Anse d'Arlet, and Anse Mitan.

If you're worried that you won't find a good spot to snorkel, get in touch with a local dive shop.  They typically offer snorkeling tours or allow snorkelers to ride along with them when they take out scuba divers.  However, if you're confident enough to head out on your own, you can rent a snorkel kit from most places from between $15 and $20(USD).  Some accommodations even provide their guests with gear as a perk of staying with them.

Snorkeling Sites

If you'd like to see below the water's surface you should consider a visit to Grand Anse d'Arlet. Known for being one of the best snorkeling beaches on the island, this locale can get busy on the weekends. Visit during the week for a more secluded feel and you may just be able to spot a sea turtle or two. This snorkeling site is located within Grand Anse-d'Arlets, easily reached by taxi West-Northwest of central Diamante.

Petite Anse is another option. A rich underwater world exists just a short swim from this sometimes crowded beach, hidden amid an outcropping of rocks.
