The monument is dedicated to Francisco Caamano Deno, the leader of two revolts in the Dominican Republic. The first was in defense of the under-siege democratic government, and the second was in hopes to bring down Trujillo's government. Both failed, and the second attempt ended with his execution. Where Deno fell the monument now stands in honor of his fight for democracy.
