Cayo Levantado

Set in Samana Bay, to call Cayo Levatado beautiful would be under-selling it. In fact, this island was used to shoot the original Bacardi Rum campaign in 1970. Today, it is a popular tourist destination due to the upkeep of the island, the calm waters that are perfect for snorkeling and swimming, and the huts selling authentic Dominican cuisine. Several hundred tourists visit this island daily, so expect a crowd.

Located in the Samana Peninsula, Cayo Levantado is on the North edge of Hispaniola. You might want even if you aren't staying very close. This isn't just another pretty beach, it is one of the more unique and quiet beaches in the Dominican Republic. While Cayo Levantado may be a little more difficult to reach, it permits unparalleled relaxation opportunities.

Cayo Levantado is accessible only by boat, and many tourists will opt to take the $10(USD) ferry from Samana.

Lined with swaying palms and white, powder soft sand, you won't find a more picturesque beach in the Dominican Republic than this. The turquoise waters are calm, and the sand you feel between your toes while you're swimming is thick and grainy, yet soft at the same time.

Restrooms are available at Cayo Levantado. It's also good to know that you will have access to chairs and umbrellas, so guests seeking some respite from the sun will not go leave unhappy. The water here is fit for snorkeling, so grab some gear if you want to see the underwater world.

Needless to say, there are other beaches on Hispaniola besides Cayo Levantado worth visiting.

You might also enjoy Bonita Beach, an additional spot which offers sufficient peace and seclusion. However, if that's not exactly what you're looking for, Playa Anadel offers more action, and isn't far from other tourist hot-spots.
