Elbow Cay Transportation

A trip to Elbow Cay may take a bit of effort

Elbow Cay offers a quiet, secluded getaway for tourists who want the beaches in paradise without the crowds that come with them. Free of airports, cruise ships, and cars, boats and golf carts are the main sources of transportation around this island, though that doesn't mean others don't come in handy.

Getting There

There is really only one way to get directly to Elbow Cay, and that is by boat. That doesn't mean you can't take a plane part of the way, then complete your journey by boat – but boating-lovers shouldn't hesitate to plan a trip for a sailing adventure.

Getting Around

Full-sized cars and moped are not permitted on the small island of Elbow Cay, and some towns on the island allow no motorized vehicles whatsoever. This means rental cars, scooters, and taxis are not an option. Golf carts and bicycles actually serve as the main mode of transportation on this island, and even on the slowest golf cart, you can traverse the entire island in about a half an hour.

As aforementioned, golf carts will not be allowed to enter the limits of Hope Town. All driving must be done south of the post office, and if you need to go into Hope Town you'll be invited to use the short term parking lot which is located across from the post office.

Air Travel

The airport nearest Elbow Cay is Marsh Harbour International Airport on nearby Abaco. Though the airport does welcome international air craft, it is a small facility and most of the traffic arrives from South Florida or one of two other international airports in the Bahamas: Grand Bahama International Airport on Grand Bahama or Lynden Pindling International Airport on New Providence Island. Tourists arriving from the United States, Canada, and Europe will typically plan a flight to Florida and from there connect to Marsh Harbour.
