Sailing and Boating Near Eleuthera

While a more difficult sail than most Bahamas islands, Eluethera may be worth it

Clear and peaceful waters hide the difficulty of sailing to Eluethera. The protected reef and sometimes zig-zagging pattern required for boats entering the island means that skilled captains must pay attention during the approach. Still, the ideal waters and wonderful Bahamas weather means maritime excursions are quite popular.

If you merely want to spend a few hours on the water, without the cost and responsibility involved with renting a boat you can join an excursion. See the table below to find information on area day sail providers.

The decision whether or not to sail to Eleuthera can be a tough one for most. Shallow waters, unfriendly reefs, rough tides, and few harbors make it a less than desirable location for more yachters. Yet, those who have visited the island in the past remember the beauty of the landscape and the friendliness of the people, and can't help but want to return. If you're willing to take the risk, you'll find several full service marinas where you can dock your boat both around Eleuthera and on the islands that surround including the Spanish Wells and Harbour Island.

... three ports of entry...

There are three ports of entry on Eleuthera, including North Eleuthera, Rock Sound, and Powell Point at Cape Eleuthera. As you sail into any of these ports, make sure to fly your yellow quarantine flag to let officials know that you have not yet been cleared to step foot on land, and call the port at VHF Channel 16 so they will know you're on your way. When you dock, an official will meet you on land and review the paperwork for your boat, complete the inspection, and have everyone on board fill out immigration paperwork. Then, you'll be responsible for a sailing and fishing permit plus departure fee which will cost between $150 and $300(USD) depending upon the length of the boat.

Deciding whether or not to sail to Eleuthera is not to be taken lightly thanks to the sometimes rough sailing conditions. If you feel as though you've got what it takes to make the trip, use all of the above information as you prepare. This will prevent you from having braved the waters that surround the island only to be turned away for not having followed the apporpriate procedures.
