Set on the east coast of Puerto Rico, Fajardo has a very busy ferry terminal that is utilized by those making trips to Puerto Rico's sister islands of Culebra and Vieques. Not only do locals use the ferries, but they are popular amongst tourists who would prefer to forgo paying extra for another plane ticket, choosing instead to take a scenic boat ride.

Ferries from Fajardo are operated by Puerto Rico Fast Ferry and offer daily trips between Culebra and Vieques. Both are small islands off the coast that are frequented by tourists looking for a quiet getaway or a quick day trip.

Each ferry can carry between 200 and 600 passengers, and they make about three crossings a day. Even with this many seats, they are very popular modes of transport, so it is highly recommended that you arrive at least one hour early in order to ensure you have a seat on the boat.

It is always important to keep in mind that schedules and fees are not set in stone. Things can change at any moment, especially in the current political climate. The contract for ferry services comes to an end on the 31st of January 2014, and while plans are in the works to keep the boats running, there is also a very real possibility that the service could halt completely. If you need further information about ferries that operate out of Fajardo, you can contact the Puerto Rico Fast Ferry from 8:00 and 11:00 a.m. as well as 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. at 787-860-2005.

Not only will you save a few dollars taking the ferry from Fajardo to either Culebra or Vieques, but you'll be able to enjoy the scenery as well, making this a highly recommended form of transportation in Puerto Rico -- assuming they continue to run on a regular basis.
