Rental Cars in Freeport

Freeport has some of the best driving conditions on the island

There is enough to do immediately within Freeport that a rental car is not a necessity, but many tourists like to have one on hand for exploration outside of the resort area. Fortunately, finding a car to rent is not a difficult task, even if driving on the island sometimes can be.

Renting a Car

If you'd like to rent a car for your stay in Freeport, you'll need a driver's license from your country of origin. If you plan to stay for longer than three months, an International Driver's License is required instead. Most rental agencies have a policy in place that they will not rent to drivers under the age of 25, but on occasion you'll encounter an agency that will allow someone as young as 21 to rent with them. If you fall into the 21 to 24 age range, you may need to make a few calls before you find the right rental agency for you.

...roads are kept in relatively good condition...

The highest concentration of rental car agencies on the island is at the Grand Bahama International Airport, but you'll find them throughout Freeport as well. Many resorts also have their own rental cars, so many sure to check with your hotel before booking elsewhere.

Driving around Freeport

If you stick to the Freeport and Port Lucaya area, you should have no trouble driving around as the roads are kept in relatively good condition. If you plan to venture out and do some exploring, however, be prepares to encounter roads that are cracked and riddled with pot holes, covered in sand, and blocked by downed trees, especially towards East End. Take your time when navigating under these perilous conditions and you should be fine. Outside of the major resort areas, road signs are also uncommon, and you'll find yourself relying on landmarks rather than named side roads to get to your final destination.

Compared to those outer roads, tourists will find the flat terrain of Freeport to be a dream. Just remember to keep to the left side of the road like in England, and do not allow yourself to be overcome with stress trying to keep up with the erratic driving behavior for locals. Again, take as much time as you need to get from place to place comfortably and safely.

The Cost of Renting a Car

You can expect to pay somewhere between $80 and $120(USD) for your rental, depending upon the type of vehicle you request, and any amenities you need. The time of year you visit Freeport might have an effect on the price – lower rates occur during the low season of tourism, then prices jump between December and April. Check with local rental agencies for the best deals, but keep in mind you'll probably end up driving an older model vehicle in order to get these kinds of deals.

As mentioned, the rates often change, and are different from company to company. Luckily, the below chart will give you a price range you can expect for different cars when coming to the Bahamas.

Local firms will sometimes charge different rates so it pays to get multiple quotes. The lowest rates are only available from the lowest cost firms when plenty of cars are on hand. The highest rates are what you might be quoted during the busiest time of year.
