Snorkeling Around Grace Bay

One of the many perks of staying in Grace Bay is that the snorkeling is great.  You can stick to the beach right in front of your resort and have a great time, but if you're like most snorkelers, this won't be quiet enough.  Fortunately, you are just moments away from dozens of other sites known for their unbelievable snorkeling opportunities.

Most local accommodations encourage their guests to do some snorkeling, and even go so far as to offer the equipment to them free of charge.  You can take the gear and spend hours happily exploring the clear, shallow waters of the Grace Bay area, usually right in front of your hotel.  There area a few groupings coral throughout where you'll be able to see sprightly fish swimming about, and this should keep your quite happy and satisfied.  It may also make you yearn to see more.

Grace Bay is located on the island of Providenciales, which is known for having great snorkeling from a number of beaches thanks to shallow reef systems and are ready to be explored almost as soon as you  enter the water.  If you head north you'll encounter the Princess Alexandra National Park which is home to not one, but two shallow reefs.

Another option is to explore the waters that surround one of the island chains many uninhabited cays and islets.  Most dive operations and boat charters as well as a few tour guides make daily trips from Grace Bay to allow guests the opportunity to explore these pristine outlying reefs.  You will find yourself spending anywhere between $40 and $150(USD) for this experience.

Snorkeling Sites

If you'd like to experience below the water's surface you might enjoy Grace Bay Beach. At what is known as one of the best beaches in the world, this coral reef is just feet from the sand and always teeming with curious fish and the occasional sea turtle. This snorkeling site is found in western Grace Bay.

The Bight Beach is another option. Provo's favorite sport for snorkeling, this reef can become quite busy during days when the conditions are good. This clearly marked reef starts right off the beach in shallow waters, and is home to many fish who are so used to people that they swim up with no fear. Barracuda and sea turtles are seen on a fairly regular basis, as are stingrays and trumpetfish.

A third site to consider is Long Point. Offering what most consider to be the best snorkeling off Provo. For starters, it is calm enough for beginners, but the sites are so interesting that experienced snorkelers will enjoy themselves as well. If you snorkel during the day, you'll see sponges, coral, stingrays, and turtles, but if you opt for a night snorkel you'll encounter sea snails, sea worms, prawns, squid, an octopus.
