Shopping on Grand Bahama

One of the things that Grand Bahama is best known for is shopping opportunities.  There are three main shopping districts on the island, and a few smaller centers here and there where visitors will be able to purchase imported luxury goods as well as locally made products for low prices and in many cases duty free.

It was in 1992 that the government removed import duty on a huge number of luxury goods.  This includes leather, jewelry, linens, timepieces, photography equipment, crystal, china, and fragrances among other things.

You'll find your best chances at finding a good deal to be at the Port Lucaya Marketplace.  Here there are several dozen shops, boutiques, and stands selling everything a typical mall would have, plus locally made wares and souvenirs.

The International Bazaar should be next on your list.  This is 10 acres of stalls, kiosks, and shops that specializes in selling unique products from around the world.  It definitely has a bazaar feel as the name implies, so keep small bills on you and be prepared to haggle.

Finally, Freeport Harbor is where cruisers will generally make their first stop.  There is a straw market selling local goods and a collection of souvenir shops selling generic trinkets.

As you shop, keep an eye out for products with the “Authentically Bahamian” sticker on the side.  These have been evaluated by the ministry of tourism and dubbed some of the best handmade local offerings.
