Rental Cars on Grand Cayman

Renting a car on Grand Cayman is the recommended transportation option

While most agree that just about any mode of transportation you choose to get around Grand Cayman will do just find, those who prefer to take matters into their own hands and be in control will always find renting a car and driving themselves to be preferable.  Fortunately, good road conditions and some of the friendliest drivers in the region make Grand Cayman an easy place to practice driving in a foreign country.

Renting a Car

The first place you'll encounter rental cars on Grand Cayman will most likely be at Owen Roberts International Airport.  Most of the major rental agencies have kiosks within walking distance of the terminal, so you won't even have to interact with a sales associate – though you will need to be sure to reserve your rental anywhere from six to 36 hours in advance of your trip to be sure there is a vehicle waiting for you.  This is especially true during the height of tourist season.  You might also decide to take a taxi to your hotel and have the agency you rent with deliver the vehicle to you.  They do this free of charge as a convenience for their customers who may not want to rent  vehicle right away.

In order to rent and drive a car on the island there are a few requirements.  First, you must have a local driving permit and in order to get one you'll have to present your own driver's license from back home.  Rental agencies will issue the permit to you for $7.50(USD) and they are valid for six months.  You can also obtain one from the George Town Police Station which is located on Elgin Avenue or the Vehicle Licensing Department on Crewe Road.  Although there is no official ruling on the matter, each agency does have age requirements.  Most places you have to be between the ages of 25 and 75 to rent, though you may find a shop that will rent to you if you are 21.  Make sure to call and check what the age limits are for your desired agency.

The Cost of Renting a Car

The price of a rental car on Grand Cayman will depend on the season, with prices higher between December and April than over the summer when prices are reduced by about 35 percent.  There are a good number of international chains which keeps prices competitive.  Rates start at $40(USD) for the smallest most basic model.

Gas Stations

The good news about driving on Grand Cayman is that conditions are good.  Driving is done on the left side of the road like in the United Kingdom, and even though this is a departure from the way many visitors drive, the roads are good and well maintained and navigation is pretty straight forward.  While you may come across a few unpaved roads in small towns they are rare. Driving is made even easier by learning the rules of the road.  Left hand turns are allowed at a red light after a full and complete stop, cell phone use while driving is against the law as is texting and driving, and speed limits must be followed or you could be ticketed.

Speed limits are typically between 30 and 50 miles per hour, and gas prices, though they vary on a daily basis, tend to be between $3.50 and $5(USD) a gallon.  Bring a GPS Navigating System with you for the best and most up-to-date directions, but you can also find paper maps at the airport and in supermarkets.
