Historically, it has been the fad that prominent families in the Cayman Islands stake their claim on a piece of land (often close to the shore where it is easier to dig) as the family burial ground. One such parcel of land, the Watler Cemetery, is a spot where visitors can view grave stones dating back to the 19th century.
The Watler Cemetery was donated to the National Trust by the Watler family in 1991, and features grave stones that date back to the beginning of the 19th century -- though it is believe that relatives from as far back as the 17th century are buried on these grounds.
What sets this cemetery apart from any other on the island is the grave markers themselves. The markers are shaped like houses and made from the combination of crushed coral and limestone daub. Similar grave markings have been found in England and Wales dating back to the middle ages, and many believe there is a connection to be made.
The overgrown cemetery is surrounded by an old stone wall and filled with towering trees. The Prospect Youth Center is located nearby.
Those wishing to visit Watler Cemetery may choose to book their trip on Grand Cayman, as those staying in this part of the Cayman Islands will have the benefit of convenient access to the historical site throughout their trip. Although the area isn't home to tremendous numbers of tourists, you'll still find a fair number of accommodations to pick from.
