La Grande-Anse

La Grande-Anse is a beach of rough seas which isn't ideal for leisure swimming, but excellent for body surfing.

Situated on the northwestern coast of the island of Basse-Terre, near Deshaies, You might think about stopping by even if you are not staying very close. La Grande-Anse is a hidden gem to some travelers: it offers an upbeat, social atmosphere, but is usually not over-crowded. If you'd rather socialize than take a nap on a completely empty beach, but don't want to compete with other beachgoers for a spot, this beach offers a comfortable middle ground.

Amenities and Ambiance

The beach at La Grande-Anse is made up of calm blue waters and grand palm trees which create a wonderful exotic ambiance on this big beauteous beach. The sands at this beach slope steeply into the water, so take head when heading out to sea.The road leading to the southern end of the beach is long and very rocky and, although the rocks are small, be prepared for a bumpy ride. The road to the north, in contrast, is considerably shorter.

The concession stand on-site could come in handy, even if you plan to have lunch elsewhere. You might also have the option to try local specialties from one of the local vendors who set up shop at the beach.

Please note that public restrooms are not available, so if you're visiting with small children you might want to consider a different location. On the opposite side of the great tourist area on Guadeloupe, La Grande-Anse Beach is not as developed, and therefore it is also never as crowded.

If you choose beach days which bring visitors a relaxing place to escape, then think about trying out La Grande-Anse; it's found in a much quieter part of the region.
