Although taxis are widely available at hotels, the airport, in Point-à-Pitre, and in other locations in Guadeloupe, this form of travel can quickly become expensive when frequently traveling from place to place. Travelers who wish to do considerable exploring should consider renting a car to save money.

Taxi Companies

Taxis are available at the airport, in Point-à-Pitre, at the cruise ship terminal, and at locations on Basse-Terre. It is also easy to arrange for taxi pick-up from hotels. Taxi drivers that own their vehicles generally do not expect tips. Those who are tipped should receive about 10 percent. Travelers can call the following companies to arrange for taxi service, and some companies will have drivers who speak English and French.

If you are ever in a location where you can't spot a taxi, call one of the services found below.

Rates, Fares, and Fees

Unlike cabs on many Caribbean islands, many taxis in Guadeloupe are metered. Approximate fares from the airport to Gosier will run about $25(USD), while the trip to Point-à-Pitre will cost approximately $18(USD). An additional 40 percent surcharge will be added to fares on Sundays and holidays, and between 9:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. Day long tours of the island can cost close to $200(USD). In the event that a cab is not metered, travelers should be sure to agree on a price with the cab driver prior to leaving.

While taxis can be suitable for very limited travel on the island, their high prices can make them unappealing. With so many shopping, beach, and eco-tourism opportunities available, travelers are likely to want to explore much of both Grand-Terre and Basse-Terre during their visit to Guadeloupe. Travelers who will do even minimal amounts of island touring should look into a rental car, as the cost of three or four taxi trips in a day can equal the daily rate of a rental car. Bus service is also available on the island.

Despite their expense, visitors may find occasion to use taxis to get from place to place, or even to take a tour. Although the costs add up, seeing Guadeloupe is worth the price.
